La Casa Fitzcarraldo in Peru

Located just outside the unique town of Iquitos in the Amazon region of Peru, La Casa Fitzcarraldo is a luxurious bed and breakfast establishment in the midst of the jungle. An oasis for those visiting the area, La Casa Fitzcarraldo achieved fame as the birthplace of the Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo movies by filmmaker Werner Herzog. The films put Iquitos on the map and fans of the movies still come to explore this jungle city and the location where the movies were filmed. (Non-guests can pay a small fee just to visit the grounds.)

Those who are registered as guests at La Casa Fitzcarraldo can choose from one of three rooms as well as a spacious bungalow. The Blue Room provides the best views of the area and also includes wireless internet, satellite TV, telephone, mini bar, and beautiful mahogany floors and furniture. The hot water in the private bath comes from an eco-friendly water tank (which means, however, that it isn’t always so hot). The Green Room actually consists of two rooms, each with a double bed. It includes all the same amenities as the Blue Room but can accommodate four visitors. The Small Room also has identical amenities but is the tiniest in square footage. The Bungalow accommodations are spacious with modest furnishings featuring one double bed, bathroom, and an extra in-room sink. Ceiling fans are including in all rooms.

On site is a beautiful pool surrounded by lush jungle foliage, large enough for the B&Bs small number of guests to enjoy lots of personal space. Shady huts are organized around the pool and are a great place to sit and read a book or enjoy a snack or drink. Guests can also enjoy a great meal there as well, including local favorites, Italian delights, or even American or Argentinian steaks.

Guests can also swing in a hammock by the lake behind the B&B or climb the three-story tree house for an amazing look at the area around the lodge. Cedars, palms, and fruit trees surround the premises and make for great photo taking as do the abundance of orchids and other local jungle flowers in the gardens of La Casa Fitzcarraldo.

The owners and staff at this bed and breakfast speak a plethora of languages besides Spanish, including English, Italian, German, French, and Swiss German. The clientele tends to be very international for that reason and there’s an opportunity to meet individuals from all over the world while staying at La Casa Fitzcarraldo.

This B&B is somewhat removed from the city itself, located about 7 minutes from the center of town and the Plaza de Armas. It is an ideal location for those who want to explore the city but don’t want to be in the midst of Iquitos, which tends to be a bit noisy and rather un-jungle-like thanks to lots of new construction.
